Introduction--
In recent times,
commercial nuclear power has emerged as one of the principle sources of energy
in the US
and even many countries abroad. As of 2007, the IAEA reported that there are
439 nuclear power reactors in operation in the world, working in 31 countries
(Number of Reactors in Operation Worldwide). About 20% of power in the US comes from
nuclear power plants from 104 nuclear plants (Nuclear Reactor).
Obviously, students and adults should be educated on this issue to secure a
bright future in this field. To begin with, nuclear reactors are the heart of
the technology which may shape the world of our near future, or may obliterate
it. They were born amid the tightest of military security during WWII and have
always impressed the layman as esoteric and fantastic entities. Nuclear
reactors, which produce heat by splitting uranium atoms, do the same job as a
conventional power producing equipment in generation of electricity. The
reactors produce heat to convert water into steam.
