Canto
is a term which is widely used by vocal melody aficionados
worldwide by Italian singers to refer the unique and florid style of singing in
equally art songs and opera. Bel Canto,
in the Italian language exactly means "beautiful singing," It was specifically
named thus in opposition to the speech-inflected and more powerful type of
singing associated with “German Opera”. This style of singing is characterized
by beauty of tone rather than theatrical power. Around 1580, Count Giovanni
Bardi of Florence started a movement in which he organized that a group of
intellectuals used to gather at his palace and discussed literature, science,
arts and sometimes even for singing as well as reviewing the Greek practices. These intellectuals included Vincenzo
Galilei, the father of Galileo and the composers
Giulio Caccini, Jacop Peri, who were instrumental in creating the first known
opera, Euridice.
