Sputnik:
The Revolution
           After the defeat of Hitler’s Nazi
Germany during World War Two, the title of most powerful nation in the world
was unclaimed. Both the United States and the Soviet Union saw this as their
time to spread their ideals all over the world. The country that could show
that they were the most powerful could win the cold war and spread either
capitalism or communism. No one could imagine that space would be the frontier
that would come to drive these countries. The successful release of Sputnik was
a revolutionary moment in the cold war and came to change the lives of the
American people forever. Before the launch of Sputnik, America invested very
little money and interest toward space and aeronautics, however after Sputnik
the American education system changed as we know it. Sputnik brought the age of
satellites which changed communication all around the world. Everything from
weather satellites to television broadcasts were changed forever. Also, Sputnik
ignited the space race which opened up space as a frontier to be conquered. The
Space race would lead to new information about the Earth and many technological
advances. Nations became more advanced militarily after Sputnik was launched.
