CYCLE OF AUTHORITARIANISM
The nineteenth century Macaulean scheme of producing a class of individuals Indian
in blood and color, but English in tastes, opinions, manners, and intellect as
a means of protecting colonial rule has come full circle in present day Pakistan.
Nothing, it seems, has changed for the post-independence generations of brown sahibs who still revere ‘white’ wisdom,
imitate their dress codes, table-manners and, more importantly, the exceptionalism that was the bedrock of the colonial ruling
culture. What we have ended up with is an English-based state hopelessly, and
intrinsically, out of tune with the common man.
