Paper Abstract

This 18 page paper considers the way in which languages are used on the Internet, utilising Internet Relay Chat channels as an example. Comparisons are made between the different linguistic and cultural uses of language and text bases communications in English and Italian. The possible reasons for this are discussed in terms of culture and evolution. The paper goes on to argue that languages may be enhanced and promoted by the use of the Internet rather than be diminished as is purported to be the case by many observers. Secondary and primary information is discussed including case studies of Italian speakers who use the Internet. The bibliography cites 10 sources.
