The Link between Alcohol Abuse in
Adolescents and Personality

Adolescence is a time during which teenagers naturally desire to experience
new things; it is a time of exploration, of curiosity; and it is also a time during
which many adolescents begin experimenting with alcohol. Some teenagers will
try drinking and then stop, or use alcohol occasionally, without any apparent
problems. Others, however, will continue to drink, and develop a dependency,
often causing significant harm to both themselves and others. Although it is
difficult to know which teenagers are at risk of abusing alcohol, many
different reasons and/or causes have been researched, which include factors
such as gender, social status, cultural and/or ethnic background, and economic
explanations. Today, however, we will be considering the link between alcoholic
abuse in adolescents and personality by reflecting upon two of the major
personality traits that researchers believe to be indicative of
high-risk alcohol abuse: shyness
and aggression.
