The
Introductory Concepts, Principles and History of General Psychology in Health
Care
ABSTRACT
         The introductory discussions present
the origin and definitions of Psychology as the study of human behaviour. It
should be noted that the goals and objectives of psychology
as a science are anchored on to describe, understand, predict and control the
conditions and situations on various human experiences in the environment.
The study of psychology in this area
views in understanding the behavior of
patients as well as the knowledge of sociology which is essential in caring
profession. Therefore, it is important to know the contribution of psychology
in understanding our relationship with our patients and ourselves. Likewise,
this contributes to the improvements in health and social care.
There are roles and involvement of
professional psychologists that are important to prevent, assess, treat and
help patients to manage emotional and behavioral problems which could lead to
enhance the psychological stability. These are the clinical psychologist,
health psychologist, counseling psychologist including the counselor,
psychoanalyst, psychotherapist, cognitive behavioral therapist and
psychiatrist.

Finally, the history of psychology
discusses the philosophical roots, physiological, and pseudoscientific schools
of thought as early discussion about the study of mental and behavioral processes. This si
followed by the discussions on structuralism and functionalism, psycho-analysis,
behaviorism, humanistic and cognitive revolution.
 Recently, psychologists are studying varied
social investigations such as gender differences, cultural diversity, sexual
orientation, marriage and divorce, abortion, adoption, intelligence testing,
sleep and sleep disorders, obesity and dieting, and other relevant issues
affecting biological functions of brain
