To
sum up director Danny Boyle’s latest film, Slumdog
Millionaire, in a word: Destiny. Jamal Malik’s roller coaster ride of a
life has been rumbling up the hill for 18 years to bring him to this world
altering climax: he makes it on a beloved television game show: “Who Wants to
be a Millionaire”.
Boyle’s most recent endeavor requires a
tremendous amount of suspension of disbelief to be enjoyable. Each piece of the
puzzle fits a little too perfectly, and any connection to reality must be
severed. The audience never fully realizes the love between the two main
characters, Jamal (Dav Patel) and Latika (Frida Pinto), leaving them
indifferent whether or not the two make it as a couple. Nonetheless, the story
not only captivates visually, but ….
