                                                                The Real Life of a Slave

                In the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas many aspects of slave life that had been misunderstood were exposed.  Douglass does not just go into detail about the horrors of slave punishment and persecution, but he brings to our attention slave culture, arts, forms of communication, religion, and what it was actually like to be a slave from a slave’s perspective.  We always view slaves from an outside perspective and Frederick Douglas shows us that beyond the slaves lied a whole different culture defined by religion, the arts, and their family life including their owners.  It is important to understand not just the horrible persecution that African Americans went through, but also the new customs that they brought upon on our country.
