Paper Abstract
A 7 page proposal for a pilot program combining nutritional and activity information for preteens, as well as education in the tools that marketers use to sell nutritionally bankrupt foods to children and their families. There are times that the phrase, “Knowledge is power,” is misused and misleading. This is not one of those situations, however. Marketers pay immediate and intense heed to consumer wishes when consumers are “voting with dollars” on the success of their various enticements to buy. Training children to recognize marketing pressures empowers them to make better choices for themselves, while also providing information that parents can use to reinforce the messages promoted.
