Paper Abstract
A 10 page paper discussing the likely effects of the merger on the future success of the two companies. Other companies in the telecommunications industry are vehemently opposing the merger and the FCC could well choose to put a stop to it, but the merger promises great success for Bell Atlantic and GTE. The paper examines the industry from the perspective of several selected economic indicators, then examines the post-merger entity in the same manner. Employment is likely to suffer from the combined effects of the merger and from the predicted trend of downsizing throughout the industry, but all other selected aspects of the industry—long distance and wireless coverage, Internet applications, consumer spending and market growth—appear to be in the post-merger company's favor.
