There is
no reason to create a federal language policy in the United States, and attempting to
change a system that already is effective would be pointless to entangle
ourselves with unnecessary policies which could possibly be detrimental to our
society. Although we are a multilingual and multicultural population, English
is the de facto language of the United
States. If the United States mandated such policy,
what would change? Almost all court decisions, street signs, and public
education, for example, are primarily in English. The report, Language Use and
English-Speaking Ability: 2000, found that 55 percent of the people who spoke a
language other than English at home also reported they spoke English "very
well." Combined with those who spoke only English at
home, 92 percent of the population age 5 and over had no difficulty speaking
English. The current permissive language policy is effective and
requires no alteration.
