Negative
Effects of Tourism
With
a constant flow of money from untold numbers of people, tourism has had a
dramatic effect on many of the world’s countries. Some of the effects are positive in nature;
many are not. Nations should think twice
before becoming too heavily dependent on this industry.
Take
the country of Singapore
for example. It was estimated that in
2005 the number of tourists having visited Singapore reached a new high of
8.94 million. These visitors spent a
combined total of S$10.8 billion (~$7.1 billion USD) with an average stay of
three days (Wikipedia Contributors, 2006). The country is an ideal vacation spot for
travelers seeking to spend time in Asia. Most citizens speak English fluently, and are
quite accepting of other cultures.
