James Joyce
Critical Analysis
James
Joyce, a writer and poet from Dublin,
Ireland, was a
modernist writer of the 20th Century. His writing varies in form,
from short story to novel, each incorporating beautiful prose and realistic, if
somewhat crude, language. Interestingly enough, although most of Joyce’s adult
life was spent outside of Dublin, the
predominant strain of his stories are told within Dublin’s geographic sphere. It seems that
even though he managed to physically escape the place he deemed as a type of
gloomy captivity, it is Dublin
that remains the central universe of Joyce’s writing, holding him hostage even
in subsequent freedom. Due to the theme of escapism and the fallible monomyths that are portrayed throughout some of his
stories, the reader feels driven to pursue each tale with interest.
