Giotto di
Bondone was born about 1266 in the village of Vespignano, near Florence.
Giotto was a painter and architect and began
his career learning from another great Florentine artist, Cimabue. Cimabue hired Giotto in as an apprentice at the tender age of twelve and
continued teaching Giotto his trade, but soon the
apprentice surpassed the teacher and continued on the path of his career. Giotto is most
known for his works in fresco (fresh, wet plaster) style of painting and most
notably for his works on the life of Saint Francis in the church Assisi.
