Diagnosis and treatment: A case presentation
July 2006
The following is the case
presentation of Mr. James Wilbur
a 41 year old African American male (E. Regnier,
personal communication, June
18, 2006, 9:39 p.m.).
James grew up in a privilege [sic] home with parents who present as being wealthier than they actually were. James
mother recalled that her son was always a demanding child who only wanted the best. James
always wanted to be the center of attention and commanded his peers.
He was a gifted athlete and hoped one day to become a professional basket ball
player. Unfortunately, James got married early and was forced to drop out of college during his
sophomore year to parent a child. The
marriage ended two years later
following domestic violence against his wife and acts of infidelity. James
had a number of romantic relationships
after his marriage ended with each woman not living up to James
standards. James
complained that each of his three wives never understood him and made unacceptable demands, such as
he should support his family and show them
affection. James
said that he never loved these women he only married them for their money because they could support him in
a style that suited a man of his caliber.
