“A Rose for
Emily”: Intolerance to change
From
the beginning of time, cultures have improved their ways of living by accepting
better forms; such process is called change. Failure to leave the past behind
can have fatal effects. William Faulkner, in his short story “A Rose for
Emily”, portraits Emily Grierson as a typical conservative person; someone who,
at the point of madness, refuses to cope with any form of change. Justified by
the fact that she was taken away her most precious possessions, she reacts stubbornly
and feels comfortable on keeping her only left treasure: her memories. The vast
symbolism along the story suggest that been stranded on the past can only
create disturbance in the way we live our lives……
