Coping With the
Past
           When Jocasta discovered that her
husband was also her son, and that he had killed his father, she killed herself
almost automatically. It was her instant
reaction to end her life- unable to deal with the truth. This takes the audience by surprise with its
suddenness. Â Oedipus wanted to speak with
his mother immediately, to sort through their emotions and make things as right
as they could be. Â This adds to the
reader’s already established understanding of him. Jocasta’s final act, however, adds a new
dimension to her character. She is
ultimately a weak and self-centered person.
