Church
Reform created hostility in the 11th Century
Beginning
in the tenth century and continuing in the eleventh century, the church wanted
to reform and separate itself from the secular world. Most people believed
kings reigned by the grace of god, so they had the traditional right to control
the church. In 1075, Pope Gregory VII
called on the emperor, Henry IV, to end his appointment of churchmen. This
event was important since it resulted in major civil war and upheaval in the
balance of power. By the early 1100’s, the movement to reform the church had
begun with the goal of liberating the church from secular influence. This paper
will prove that the reform created great conflict between secular authority and
church authority.
