The Use of Assistive Technology to Educate Children with
Learning Disabilities
The use of modern
technologies to assist in the teaching of children with learning disabilities
has proven to help eliminate some of the barriers teachers and parents face
inside and outside of the classroom. Assistive technology is a phrase that
describes technologies or devices that are used to help people with
disabilities overcome learning obstacles. The use of assistive technology
allows children to learn and interact with other children (Paul, Lavely, Cranston-Gingras, and
Taylor 231).
The history of
assistive technology goes back a long way. Within the past decade important
events have occurred which have perpetuated the growth and utilization of
assistive technologies, particularly in the United Stated. Before examining
some of the acts that have been passed with regard to Assistive Technologies,
it is important to understand the laws that have been enacted to protect and
assist children who have disabilities.
