Paper Abstract

Is Cleopatra Worth Fighting For?

In William Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra, Antony, one of the three leaders of the Roman Empire, leaves Rome to spend most of his time with the beautiful Egyptian queen Cleopatra. Upon hearing of his wife’s death however, Antony returns to Rome. In order to patch up a disagreement between Caesar, who is another Roman leader, and himself, Antony marries Caesar’s sister Octavia but soon leaves her to go back to Cleopatra. This starts a war between the two rulers which Antony eventually loses and in the end he commits suicide because of a false report of Cleopatra’s death. Throughout the play it seems that Cleopatra does nothing for Antony but cause chaos. He however continually gives up everything in order to be with her. But was she really worth it? What is worth fighting for? Is your love for someone or something worth risking everything?
