Evening the Playing Field
           Affirmative
Action has been in effect for forty-five years as an answer to racial
inequality. Originally, it was planned to temporarily even the playing field,
affirmative action focused mainly on education and jobs. The policy called for
active measures to be taken to guarantee that African Americans and other
minorities experience the same opportunities for school admissions,
scholarships, financial aid, promotions, pay raises, and career advancements
that white people had the luxury of having access to. Â In the past, affirmative action was a solution
