Abstract
The main objective of this research is purely theoretical within the
mainstream of the semantic theory proposed by Lyons (1968). This is an attempt to
investigate two lexical relations that have a great importance in MSA, namely,
Synonymy and Antonymy. Such relations have wide
arguments between Arab semanticists as some of them support the notion of their
existence and the others deny it.
Three grammatical categories were examined, namely, nouns, verbs and
adjectives. The researcher tested Synonymy briefly by collecting items that are
considered to be equivalent in meaning and placed them in lieu of the target
item to see if differences would take place. The analysis revealed that ‘total’
synonymy holds between the lexemes chosen from the grammatical categories in
question. Regarding to Antonymy, the rules proposed
by the theory were applied to different lexical items in order to check whether
complementarity, antonymy
and converseness exist in Arabic.
