This is a 5 page paper discussing Rigoberta Menchu’s expanding understanding of “community”. Her father, a fighter for independence of the people of Guatemala was eventually killed for his beliefs and Menchu continued his battle. Her Mayan culture already had an open perspective of community responsibility in regards to the raising of children. This perspective of community was broadened to include the community of all of the people of her country through her education with Catholic Action which also provided her with the reading, writing and language skills needed to organize political action. Once in Mexico, Menchu realized the enormity of the oppression which existed throughout the world and her idea of community and global responsibility further expanded to include all those in the global community. This is a 5 page paper describing the impact of the September 11th, 2001 had on the Islamic community of San Diego. The Islamic community in San Diego was hard hit after the terrorists’ attacks of September 11, 2001 for many reasons: firstly, two of the terrorists were found to have been living in their community before the attacks; secondly, in the mid-1990s, an Islamic extremist group, the American Islamic Group, decided to move their central headquarters to San Diego from the East Coast; and third, despite the fact that the population of Muslims in the San Diego area is over 100,000 and the history of their community goes back over 100 years, the non-Muslim community in the area had instantly began to fear and resent them. Because of this, the Muslim community in San Diego immediately began information and educational forums in an attempt to open and introduce the Islamic community to their neighboring communities. Although, the response to their open forums was slow at first, they hope that with continued effort on their behalf and on the behalf of non-Muslims that their fellow Americans will understand that Islam is a religion based on peace and not hatred. 10. Colonial Latin America: Social Networks, Identity, and Consensus   (6  Pages, 71.7 $ (USD) )
This is a 6 page paper discussing colonial Latin America in relations to the patron-client relationship and social classes. While colonial Latin America was segregated into a hierarchy of social and class systems with the Spanish elite at the top, the maintenance of the system was possible by the textured social networks within communities which existed before the introduction of the Spaniards but nevertheless added the elite Spaniards as the ruling class. The Spaniards did their best to degrade the culture of the Native Indians by introducing Spanish customs and religion and separating the communities into barrios however although the Indians observed these new customs in a public sense, their private identity still contained traditional cultural, familial and social elements. Largely the Spanish elite ruled with stability based on the belief in the class system which expected them to manage the communities with justice. When that expectation failed however, consensus among the lower classes was obtained and riots ensued which led the way to eventual independence. Bibliography lists 9 sources.
