A Comparison of Victorian Poetry and Early 20th Century Poetry in Regards to the Relationships of Men and Women and the Role of Women: Tennyson, Arnold, Hardy and Yeats
(4 Pages, 47.8 $ (USD) )
This is a 4 page paper comparing the roles of women and the relationships between men and women in Victorian and early 20th century poetry. A comparison of the Victorian poets Alfred Lord Tennyson and Matthew Arnold with the slightly more modern early 20th century poets Thomas Hardy and William Butler Yeats shows the slowly shifting perception of the relationships between men and women and the general role women play within society and literature. Tennyson and Arnold show a struggle in their attempts to retain women in the traditional romantic roles as objects of affection although their later works reveal that while women are becoming more a part of man’s society, their acceptance is still difficult. Arnold writes more so of the isolation men feel within relationships and how vain “mortal love” can be. Hardy and Yeats through the introduction of more female characters in their works not only give women larger roles within society but also show the increasing power of women. Hardy reveals the difficulties which can exist within relationships while Yeats reveals that women and men can have equal relationships as friends and women should not be judged purely on their appearance under the classic romantic notions. Samuel Taylor Coleridge and the Important Role of Nature in “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” and “Kubla Khan”
(3 Pages, 35.85 $ (USD) )
This is a 3 page paper discussing the role of nature in Coleridge’s work. Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) wrote during the Romantic Movement under which his prose and poetry took in an understanding of nature which was intrinsically important during his time. His work often explored the many sides of nature including its beauty, power, and sometimes the mental isolation man can feel when removed from nature or when immersed in it. Two works “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” and “Kubla Khan” explore different physical and mental components imposed by nature by Coleridge as the Mariner is punished both physically and mentally in his crime against and disrespect for nature while the obvious respect for the force of natural elements is shown throughout “Kubla Khan”. Gerard Manley Hopkins: Romanticism
(5 Pages, 59.75 $ (USD) )
5 pages in length. Gerard Manley Hopkins has a dual relationship with the poetic verse for which he is so well known; on the one hand, he adheres to the traditions of English poetry as practiced by the English Romantic poets, while on the other he departs in such a manner that his contemporaries thought Hopkins provided too much of a tortured sound. Inasmuch as the Romantic period is defined by a oneness with nature and the intangible world in general, Hopkins took this historic opportunity to express myriad feelings he had in relation to life, environment, social composition. As well, Romanticism is also indicated by a certain sense of melancholy for which the poet utilizes as a vehicle for such intense expression. The exact manner by which Hopkins reveals this connection is an integral component to the poet's overall mystique, utilizing the combined efforts of adherence to and departure from the norm in order to achieve his objective.
