The Issue of Labeling Genetically Engineered Foods in Canada
(11 Pages, 131.45 USD)
This is an 11 page paper discussing the issue of labeling genetically engineered foods in Canada. Currently within Canada recent consumer polls have indicated that over 95% of Canadians want genetically engineered (GE) or genetically modified (GM) foods labeled as such. While this may appear to be a straight forward issue simply resolved with mandatory legislation, within Canada there are still no laws requiring labeling of genetically engineered food. Currently, businesses, the government and consumers seem to be at an impasse in regards to voluntary labeling which was introduced in 1999 and the possibility of mandatory labeling currently enforced in over 35 countries worldwide. While mandatory labeling should be introduced in Canada, consumers should also be aware that in order to do so, the federal government will have to implement a complex and costly monitoring process in order to enforce the legislation properly. In addition, because of cross pollination which has already occurred between genetically engineered crops and organic crops, most legislators feel that most labels would have to include the phrase “may contain genetically engineered material” which would not provide the consumer with any more information than he or she has now. While labeling should be considered because of consumer demand, consumers must also realize the impact this may have on Canada within the international market, as Canada now is the world’s third largest producer of genetically engineered crops and its major trading partner, the United States, has no current labeling restrictions. Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) are responsible for current labeling policies which focus mainly on health and safety concerns in a product and the mandatory exclusion of non-factual information on a product label. Should GE labeling be required in Canada, it should not deter consumers from the health and safety concerns. Lastly, because genetically engineered foods have been deemed as safe, that is why they are now not required to be labeled. This is also controversial as some advocate that since GE foods have only been in use for 10 years, this is not enough time to evaluate long term impact on consumer health and the environment. Case Study: Poor Communication
(8 Pages, 95.6 USD)
8 pages in length. The similarity in communication issues that caused the behavioral dysfunctions described in both cases is the way in which the true problem was never discussed in either situation. Other than brief allusions on a couple of occasions, Mike did not sit Hannah down and explain to her why he was unsatisfied with the group, why he and the other four participants – the only ones providing answers – kept to themselves on the other side of the table or why there was such tension between and among what was supposed to be a friendly collection of people pooling their knowledge to win a trivia contest. For Harry, he should have addressed his sales engineers himself instead of sending in a combative stand-in who immediately launched into an argument. Harry held the respect of his sales engineers, a feature he could have easily utilized to his advantage if he would have simply explained his perspective and why the need for an employment contract had ever materialized in the first place. As it was, the premature leak served to threaten everyone who attended the meeting without any of them truly knowing why they were on guard, making them hostile and unyielding under the best of circumstances; within minutes, Harry had alienated his entire collection of sales engineers without ever having the opportunity to discuss with them the comprehensive components of his proposal. The Use of Process Improvement Models in the Software Engineering Industry Including the Capability Maturity Model (CMM) and the Importance of the ISO 9000
(8 Pages, 95.6 USD)
This is an 8 page paper discussing process improvement models in the software engineering industry. Process improvement models in the software engineering industry are important in the development of consistent and improved output of software. Many of the early models were based on generic manufacturing models and were difficult to apply in the software engineering process. A useful process however is defined in the capability maturity model (CMM) while allows for five stages of maturity in a project over the course of conception and the expected development in the first years of the process. The final stage of the CMM, level 5, allows for further change and improvements to continue. Regardless of the improvement model chosen for a software engineering company, its compliance with international standards, the ISO 9000, are also considered essential for the guarantee of continued high standards and improved quality. The documentation aspects of the ISO 9000 are also considered useful models in the establishment of a software development process. Bibliography lists 17 sources.

Review of “Engineering and Entrepreneurship”
(5 Pages, 59.75 USD)
A 5 page paper discussing an engineer-turned-entrepreneur’s assessment of his current role in his company. He says he is “acting” CEO as the company continues the search for a “real” one. There is a stereotypic view of engineers as qualifying for “absent-minded professor” roles, and in many cases that stereotype is well deserved. Of course there are more rounded engineers, but a company founded by an engineer to promote some product or process likely has been founded by an individual more interested in the “hands on” work of the company rather than in its management. This engineer demonstrates a high level of honesty in self-assessment in choosing to remain in the more creative role rather than poorly function in a more administrative one.
